When Aragorn did not speak, Faramir looked to the woman who was also in the room again. She was dressed in Elven fabric and her weaponry was also that of an elf, but she was of the race of men. Faramir was puzzled by the woman's presence, and looked to the king, who said and did nothing. He turned back to the woman and his ears caught her speaking Sindarin. Faramir, like all the other Dunedain of the south, could speak the language so he understood what she said.
Faramir placed a hand on the woman's shoulder, a puzzled look spread across his face. Faramir looked, once more, to the King who reamained unmoven by the scene.
'Ya naa lle?' Faramir asked.

Brania had been preparing to leave, since Strider had made no comment on her farewell, when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She stiffened a little at the contact. Turning to look, she saw the one person she didn't really want to see...It was him who could possibly be Faramir. He had just spoken to her in Sindarin Elvish. She inclined her head and took a step back, forcing him to either drop his hand from her shoulder or step with her.
"I am no one of concequence, Heru en amin. I am a simple traveller," she said.
(Heru en amin- my lord- non familiar)

Aragorn, or Strider as Brania knew him as, had watched Faramir move a hand to stop her from leaving. He watched with great hope, hope that she would tell him who she was, because if she didn't it was he, Aragorn, who was going to be asked the questions. The King pushed himself out of his seat and stood to his full height.
'Rana!' Aragorn said, almost pleading her to be truthful.
Aragorn gave Brania a look, he held her gaze and pleaded with her, never speaking a word.

Her attention was brought back to the King as he stood and almost pleaded with her, all in the one little word of her name. He wanted her to tell her identity? Then this must be Faramir, or else it would not matter so much. Did she trust him enough...Strider that is. He hadn't told her about being the King, though he had explained that and she hadn't felt he wasn't telling her the truth on that one. Could she tell him? She looked back at Faramir and considered. Even if he knew, that wouldn't change anything, would it? They still had two seperate lives that would never cross, except in Strider's presence.
"Manka lle merna," she said, softly, "I am Brania, known to most of the world as Rana." Brania looked at Aragorn. "Aa' menealle nauva calen ar' malta. I must go now." She turned and began to walk out of the hall.

Faramir looked to Elessar, confusion on his face as the King appeared to plead with the wandered. Brania? Faramir searched his mind for someone he knew with that name. He looked again to Elessar. It clicked and Faramir almost growled at the King, before turning on his heel and quickly following the girl. He could not see her and continued to run.
'Brania!?' Faramir shouted.
She was dead, or at least they had told him and Boromir so. And she was dressed in Elven fabric, and knew Aragorn. Faramir stopped running. He stood on the battlements of Minas Tirith and for the first time, the people who set eyes on him would see that he looked weak.
'Brania.' Faramir whispered to himself.

She had left the hall as quickly as possible, not wanting to deal with the rise of emotions that went through her as she revealed herself to her brother after all these years. Only Strider could have made her do it, at least the only Man who could have. There were a few Elves who had won her trust enough to convince her. Brania blinked as she stepped back out into the sunlight, and told herself the tears in her eyes was due to the sun, not anything else.
'Brania!?' Faramir shouted.
She heard him. She had reached her horse, that a kind member of the guard had kept for her. Brania was in the middle of swinging up into the saddle when she heard the shout. Finishing her movement and taking the reigns, she looked up to see Faramir on the nearby ramparts. He didn't look well. Her heart broke to see him like that and she sat still on her horse, unable to tear her gaze away, unable to leave. Could she really abandon him? She still loved him, even though he couldn't have any feelings for her, since she had been dead to him for so long.

Faramir gazed out onto the field of Pellenor, expecting to see her ride out of the gates any moment now. A single, pearl-like tear trickled down his face and into his beard. He almost laughed at the irony. Faramir had seen her, leaving the first time, he and Boromir had tried to follow, but Denethor had stopped them. His father had told him that she was dead and had tried to force her teacher upon him in some vain attempt to bring Faramir round to the same stature of his brother. Faramir had resisted his teachings and instead had gone with his brother, who welcomed the company.
Faramir dropped to his knees, unable to look over the top of the ramparts anymore, in fear of seeing her leave him again. She had abandoned him once, she might do it again.
'Why?' He whispered to himself.

She had just convinced herself that she could leave. He would be alright, he had a wife and a life and a command. He would be ok without her. He was used to being without her. Brania had turned her horse and risked on last look at her brother when she saw him drop to his knees on the ramparts and her heart dropped. Without thinking, she found herself off her horse and running for the stairs.
Brania ignored the looks of the Watch as she suddenly appeared on the ramparts. She paused, and watched him for a moment. She should just leave, just turn around and leave. She found she couldn't though and hesitantly rested a hand lightly on his shoulder. "A-are you alright?" she asked softly.

Faramir looked up at the woman who had asked him the question. She had placed a warming hand on his shoulder and he smiled. He was obviously going insane, like his father had. He sat looking at her for sometime. It couldn't be her, no, she had abandoned him not once, but twice. He stood up, or tried to and scrambled away from her.
'You -- you abandoned us.' He whispered and then his voice became angry, sad and loud at the same time. 'YOU ABANDONED US!'
As he shouted another tear dropped from his eye and he looked as though he were pleading.
'Why?' He whispered, loud enough for her to hear.

She took a step back at his tone and his accuisation. She should have known that he wouldn't take her presence well. That was a big mistake. She should just leave and return to Lorien. But, even as she was thinking that, she heard his whispered question and couldn't help but answer. "I didn't abandon you," she said. "I-I suffered for 5 years and no one would help me."
Brania gripped the stone rampart and swallowed. She hated to think about those years. "I had to leave. It's not like anyone really missed me, anyway."

Faramir stood up now, this wasn't a vision, it was really her, and she was trying to justify her leaving them. She had never given an explenation, never, not even a note.
'Why did you leave? Boromir and I missed you! Father believed you had simply died. Why? Why did you leave me. First you and then Boromir, both of you left me here alone with him. He placed the blame for both of your deaths on me.....'
It was true, Denethor had blamed both disappearances on Faramir. First for some reason that made no sense and second for not fighting for the right to be sent to Rivendell hard enough. He couldn't see any reason why she would leave. Life in the White Tower wasn't bad, you were fed, you had clothing and you had somewhere to sleep, so why would she want to leave?
'Why?' Faramir repeated, this time sounding almost pathetic.

He stood and she fought with the desire to just hug him. It hurt to think that he was mad at her for leaving. Didn't he understand what she had suffered? Her own father didn't believe her. What was she supposed to have done?
"Why would Denethor blame you for my death?" she asked. Brania didn't call him Father, she couldn't match Denethor with her image of what a father should be. Though she had not interacted with him, she considered Lord Celeborn as a father figure.
"What else should I have done? Boromir was always gone with the Guard and you were always studying in the records room or with the Grey Wanderer. Denethor told me to stop making up stories."

Faramir seethed with anger. He was too busy reading scroll or talking to Gandalf. Did she think that he would not put all things aside to aid her? Did she believe, like all others had, that he was less of a man than Boromir had been?
'Ah, I see,' Faramir laughed a little. 'You were like the rest of them. They didn't believe I was as bold as Boromir. He and I were best of friends, and I have no ill thoughts of him, but did you think I not as bold as he? That I would not give you my fullest attention in your time of need?'
'I may not have been as daring as my brother, but we were not the same person. In fact, we were very different. But that does not mean I wouldn't have protected you in the same way that he had! I know what Niko was like, Brania. Why didn't you tell one of us?'

"Bold had nothing to do with it. I was 17, Faramir! I had been at Niko's mercy for 5 years. I hate to say it but he was a good teacher. He taught me that my brothers were too busy for me, that you had your lives and I wasn't in intrefere. You were both adults, not children and had things to do." She turned her back to him and shivered at the remembered years. It had taken several years with Rumil to repair the damage Niko had done to her.
"I risked everything, but going to Denethor," she whispered, still with her back to her brother. "And he didn't believe me. I thought Niko was right. He said Denethor wouldn't care and he didn't. I didn't want to find out that neither of my brothers would believe me either. Perhaps this was a mistake. Perhaps it would be simpler if I just left."

'You never risked anything by going to him. You knew all along that he wouldn't believe you. He would only ever believe what Boromir told him.' The statement, coming from anyone else, would have sounded jealous, but not from Faramir. He had grown to understand that it was Denethor's fault and not Boromir's that things were this way.
'If you leave now,' Faramir growled, his voice was low and slow. 'Do not ever think about coming back.'
If she were to leave him standing where he was, then there would be no chance for her to get to know him. And that's the way it was. Faramir may not survive being abandoned again.
